Make Sure You Have It Permitted
Depending on the city or county that you live in, you may be required to have a permit for your septic system before it's installed. Typically, the permit process involves several inspections throughout the installation process to make sure that it is in compliance with local laws and that it's not going to damage anything around your home. Although it may seem like a pain to have it permitted, if you go to sell your house one day and it's not permitted, you may run into some issues.
Make Sure It's Big Enough For Your Household
If you have a lot of kids living at home or if your house has a lot of square footage, then you are going to need to have either a larger septic tank or two septic tanks. When you don't have a big enough septic tank system, it can cause your septic system to work a lot of overtime which means that it will also have to be pumped on a regular basis. Although it is possible to maintain a small septic tank system, if you can just get a bigger one upfront it may save you a lot of hassle in the future.
Make Sure You Have a Big Enough Drain field
Your septic tank will be placed about 10 to 20 feet from your home and then on the other end of your yard, you will have what is called a drain field. Your septic tank is attached to the drain field through a series of pipes that are responsible for dispursing the wastewater from the septic tank into the soil. The soil which is in the drain field will absorb the water and disperse it so that it doesn't get too saturated.
